Why you need an Accessibility Statement

By placing an accessibility statement on your website, you send a clear message to both users and regulatory bodies. With a formal Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR) you outline the ways your organization is working to ensure equal access to products, services, and information. In some cases, a specific ACR is required by law, depending on your location, offer, or funding. But even when not required, a meaningful statement strengthens both trust and communication with customers and partners.

Accessibility matters:

90% of disabled consumers feel affected at the decision-making stage of purchases by either: limitations of design, limitations in available information, or how information was presented.

What makes a good Accessibility Statement

At the minimum, your statement should define what standard your organization is using to measure accessibility, and how you’ve achieved compliance. It must also include contact information for user feedback. Your organization’s commitment to accessibility for people with disabilities should be stated here as well.

To be valuable and useful, your statement should also include any known barriers to accessibility and details of how those issues are being addressed. It is also considered a best practice to have a link to your statement in the main menu or footer and Help/FAQ section.

VPAT® vs. Accessibility Conformance Reports: What’s the difference?

You may have also heard that you need a Vendor Product Accessibility Template (VPAT®) along with your Conformance Report. Both can be valuable tools for aligning with accessibility laws and regulations.

A VPAT® and ACR vary from each other in the level of detail they provide. The VPAT® is a standardized template that shows an overview of compliance with accessibility criteria. An ACR is expected to go more in-depth and elaborate on the information in the VPAT®. It should explain if guidelines and mandates are met or not met, what steps are being taken, and how compliance is being maintained.
